Dive into the evolving soul of the 9th Street Market as INTERMINABLE — a Philly-based futuristic bilingual band— invites you to join them for a meal with their friends at Alma del Mar (the magical little restaurant featured on Queer Eye Season 5 on Netflix).

Through original music in Spanish and English, Interminable explores connections as diasporic peoples, weaving together the common threads of improvisation and swing from traditional Mexican son jarocho music, jazz, rock, funk, and electronic music.

  • The evening will be an opportunity for us to learn from each other, both as a band and with audience members, because even as a band there's so much we've never had space to discuss.  Through music, we've found those points of connection, but sitting down and having folks ask us whatever they want will be something new for the band, and what better way to do it than with a meal.

    Me and Marcos met in 2014 when I taught a guitar class at a now-defunct arts and culture nonprofit in South Philly called Casa Monarca, as part of a class I was taking in college.  He was one of the guitar students and came in with such joy and motivation to these classes.  From then on, we'd always say hello when I passed his fishery on 9th Street and say hi to him and his family.  It's been beautiful seeing the success they've had with Alma del Mar and seeing them shine on Queer Eye.  Doing concerts there, stopping by to eat and say hi, or seeing them come out to one of our events around Philly, it's been a really beautiful friendship and I'm excited to host this at a place where the food and space are set up with so much care and love for the community.

MEET THE BAND

XIMENA VIOLANTE

Bandleader and Songwriter

Ximena (he/they) is a Mexican violinist, jarana player, singer, teacher, actor, and organizer creating spaces for people to celebrate their roots, re-imagine their futures, and expand their communities.  Ximena is the bandleader and songwriter for Interminable.

In 2015, Ximena co-founded Son Revoltura, a Philly-based weekly community workshop of son jarocho, an afromestizo musical tradition from Mexico. He has been a featured guest musician with with Las Cafeteras, Jarana Beat, Renee Goust, Vivir Quintana, Moor Mother, Latin-Grammy-winners Mariachi Flor de Toloache, and on the soundtrack for Disney’s The Last of the Chupacabras. 

They will be Musical Director of the original play Nichos, alongside director Tanaquil Márquez and Mexican band Ampersan, which will be presented in Fall of 2024 thanks to funding from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.  

YEHO BOSTICK

Bass, Synthesizers, Percussion, Clarinet

Yeho Bostick (he/him) is a 38 year old multi-instrumentalist, born and raised in the city of Philadelphia. He started his musical training on the clarinet in the 90s, which led him to study at the High School for Creative and Performing Arts and the University of Miami.

Since then, he has performed in numerous ensembles (including Interminable, Darlingtyn, HoneyTRON, and Eat Your Beats), playing shows across the NE USA region, and has been a very active member in the Philadelphia music community in various aspects including event organization, promotions, and concert photography. Even in the light of recent health battles, Yeho continues performing, with the ideals of music therapy and community high in mind.

MARTY GOTTLIEB-HOLLIS

Trumpet, production, audio engineer

Marty Gottlieb Hollis aka Martronimous (they/them) is a Philadelphia-based trumpet player, producer, and audio engineer. Their own music bridges jazz, hip-hop, and ambient, centering themes of self-discovery, queerness, and gender exploration.

Associated acts include Interminable, Asher Roth, Jakeya, Justmadnice, Sinnia Brown, Hardwork Movement, Upholstery and more. Find Marty at The Barn in West Philly every Tuesday night.

MATTHEW JERNIGAN

Drums

Matthew (he/him) is a new Philadelphia-based musician who has been playing and exploring percussion for thirteen years. He studied jazz performance at Temple University from 2012-2016. In 2018, he met Ximena at a gig for Poet Laureate Yolanda Wisher.

After a set of improvised music, they found a commonality in thought and spirit. Shortly after the gig, he became the band’s new drummer. Aside from his work with Interminable, he plays in groups that draw from the jazz idiom as well as electronic, folk, and pop genres. Primarily he expresses himself from behind the drumset and conventional western percussion. But over the years he has become a multi-instrumental educator for Philadelphia based non-profit Beyond the Bars.

ST. CLAIR SIMMONS

Trombone

St. Clair Simmons (he/him) is a music performer and educator living in South Philadelphia. Coming from a small town in York County, he moved to New York City to pursue a degree in Jazz Trombone Performance at The Manhattan School of Music.

After graduating from MSM, St. Clair moved to Philadelphia, and has since been performing with any and all music groups that are in need of a trombone player. He is also in his fifth year of teaching for Play on Philly, a non-profit organization that fulfils the need for an instrumental music program in schools that don't have one.

  • Interminable’s innovative tapestry of sounds is expressed through the band’s unique combination of instruments.  Ximena Violante (Vivir Quintana, Renee Goust) sings and plays the electric guitar and jarana, a guitar-like instrument from the afroindigenous son jarocho tradition of Mexico.  Marty Gottlieb-Hollis (Martronimous) on trumpet and St. Clair Simmons on trombone join forces as a horn section.  Matt Jernigan on drums and Yeho Bostick (Circadian Rhythms, Darlingtyn) on bass solidify the rhythmic backbeat.  

    Born out of a chance encounter on the train in 2015 which led to their debut a week later, opening for nationally-renowned cumbia group, Viento Callejero, the band has amassed an impressive portfolio, sharing stages with nationally- and internationally-recognized acts including La Santa Cecilia, Radio Jarocho, Mare Advertencia Lirika, DJ Precolumbian, Jarana Beat, Lady Moon & The Eclipse, and Moor Mother.   

    Their debut album, rebirth::renacer, was released in November of 2018, bringing together musicians from across the US and Mexico. What is a Table Session?

It's a gathering. A place of exchange. A time to be still and listen or get up and dance. To eat delicious food. To connect with other people about art, food, and life. Intercultural Journeys is bringing artists and audiences around the table, sharing a special moment with friends and strangers across the city and working to rekindle our connections to one another.

Three curators, Solomon Temple (October 2022), Mel Hsu (January 2023), and Ximena Violante (April 2023) lead the sessions. Each with their own story, each with their own musical language to share, and each with a different cuisine to explore and enjoy. Join us around the table all throughout the season.
